Description

Active Ingredients & Formulation

• Contains Diphenhydramine HCl (5 mg per 5 ml): an antihistamine that alleviates allergy symptoms and also possesses cough-suppressant properties  

• Includes Dextromethorphan HBr (6.25 mg per 5 ml): a centrally acting antitussive (cough suppressant)

• The syrup is typically available in a 120 ml bottle

Mechanism & Purpose

• Diphenhydramine reduces allergic symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, while also helping suppress cough reflexes.

• Dextromethorphan works centrally in the brain to dampen the cough signal, reducing cough frequency and intensity

• It is primarily indicated for dry, irritating, non-productive coughs, such as those from colds or upper respiratory tract infections

Uses & Indications

Commonly used for:

• Dry coughs caused by colds, flu, allergies, or respiratory infections.

• Symptoms like sneezing, itchy throat/nose, and general upper respiratory tract discomfort

• Some sites note relief in wheezing, chest congestion, bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, and sinus-related symptoms .

Dosage Guidelines

• Adults and children 12 and older: 10 ml every 6–8 hours; up to a maximum of 40 ml in 24 hours

• Children (6–12 years): around 7.5 ml (1½ teaspoon) per dose, 3–4 times daily

• Always shake well before use, measure with an appropriate device, and do not exceed the recommended dose

Warnings & Contraindications

• Avoid use in individuals with emphysema, COPD, or chronic coughs without medical guidance .

• Contraindicated in cases of known hypersensitivity to diphenhydramine or dextromethorphan

• Should be used cautiously in pregnancy and breastfeeding—consult a healthcare professional beforehand

• Avoid operating machinery or driving, especially after dosing, due to potential drowsiness or dizziness .

• Alcohol and other sedatives can increase drowsiness—avoid combining .

Side Effects

Common (generally mild):

• Drowsiness, dizziness

• Dry mouth

• Nausea, vomiting

• Upset stomach

Less common but more serious:

• Confusion, mood or mental changes

• Irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, severe dizziness, breathing difficulties
