Indications & Uses

Filmet Suspension is used to treat and prevent a wide range of infections, including but not limited to:

  • Amoebiasis, both intestinal and extra-intestinal

  • Giardiasis

  • Acute ulcerative gingivitis

  • Anaerobic skin infections such as leg ulcers and pressure sores

  • Acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, and more


Mechanism of Action

Metronidazole is activated under anaerobic conditions, where its reduced form disrupts microbial DNA strands, leading to bacterial or protozoal cell death


Dosage & Administration

Typical dosing (Oral Suspension):

  • Adults & children over 10 years: ~200 mg three times daily (via 5 ml doses), depending on condition

  • Children:

    • Ages 7–10 years: ~100 mg three times daily

    • Ages 3–7 years: ~100 mg twice daily

    • Ages 1–3 years: ~50 mg three times daily

Doses vary significantly based on the specific infection; refer to therapeutic protocols. Filmet is best taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption .


Safety & Precautions

Contraindications: Known allergy to metronidazole or other nitroimidazoles 
Common side effects: Metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, rash 
Watch for serious effects: Neurological signs like neuropathy or seizures with long-term/high-dose use

Drug and alcohol interactions:

  • Alcohol: Avoid during and for 2–3 days after treatment—risk of disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, nausea, headache)

  • Drug interactions: May affect warfarin, lithium, cyclosporin, 5-FU, busulfan, phenobarbital, and phenytoin clearance—monitor closely

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:

  • Category B: Use only if clearly needed

  • Excreted in breast milk—exercise caution
