Description
Evacol Lactulose Solution USP is an osmotic laxative featuring lactulose as its active ingredient. Typically dosed at around 3.35 g per 5 ml, this formulation softens stools by drawing water into the colon and promotes regular bowel movements. In patients with liver dysfunction, it also aids in reducing systemic ammonia levels by converting it into non-absorbable ammonium—supporting the management of hepatic encephalopathy.
Mechanism of Action:

Osmotic Effect – Lactulose is fermented by gut bacteria into organic acids, increasing intestinal water retention and stimulating bowel motility.

Ammonia Reduction – Acidifying the colon converts ammonia (NH₃) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), preventing its reabsorption.
