Mechanism & Uses

Mechanism of Action: Lactulose is broken down by colonic bacteria into acids, increasing osmotic pressure in the colon, drawing in water, and softening stool; it also acidifies the colon to convert ammonia into ammonium, aiding in its elimination

Constipation (chronic and habitual)

Hepatic encephalopathy, for reducing blood ammonia levels and managing neurological symptoms associated with liver disease

Dosage & Administration

Hepatic Encephalopathy| 30–50 ml, three times daily, adjusted to produce 2–3 soft stools daily
Safety & Precautions

Side Effects: Initial bloating, gas, and cramps are common and usually transient. Overdose may result in diarrhea.
