Description
What It Is
Lactulin is a lactulose-based osmotic laxative (synthetic disaccharide) used to treat chronic constipation and manage hepatic encephalopathy (a brain condition caused by liver dysfunction)
Mechanism of Action
-
Softens stool by drawing water into the colon, promoting easier bowel movements
-
Reduces blood ammonia levels—beneficial in liver disease—by converting ammonia into non-absorbable ammonium in the colon
Uses & Indications
-
Chronic or occasional constipation, especially when stool is hard or infrequent
-
Hepatic encephalopathy, to help prevent confusion, tremors, and lowered consciousness due to high blood ammonia
Onset & Safety
-
Usually takes 2–3 days (up to 48 hours) to show an effect
-
Common side effects: bloating, flatulence, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea (particularly if dosage is too high)
-
Generally safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but consult a healthcare provider if used long-term in vulnerable populations
-
Avoid in cases of galactosemia or lactose intolerance due to sugar content of the syrup
Practical Use Tips
-
Dosage: Typically adjusted to produce 2–3 soft stools per day; adults often start with 15–30 ml daily; for hepatic encephalopathy, up to 30–50 ml three times daily under medical supervision
-
Administration: Can be taken with or without food. If the taste is too sweet, mix with water or fruit juice
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially during treatment, to prevent dehydration
