Ambolyt Syrup (100 ml) is a mucolytic cough syrup containing Ambroxol 15 mg/5 ml, ideal for clearing thick mucus and easing productive coughs in conditions like bronchitis or sinusitis. Administer as directed (shake well), typically 10 ml three times daily for adults, while using lower doses for children. Generally well-tolerated but avoid during early pregnancy and in those with ulcer or convulsion risk. Monitor for mild stomach upset or rare allergic reactions.

Description

Active Ingredient

  • Ambroxol Hydrochloride – 15 mg per 5 ml of syrup

Classification

Indications

Used for treating productive coughs and various respiratory tract conditions accompanied by thick, sticky mucus, including:

  • Acute and chronic bronchitis

  • Laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, rhinitis

  • Asthmatic bronchitis or asthma with heavy expectoration

  • Bronchiectasis, chronic pneumonia, and other similar inflammatory disorders

Mechanism of Action

  • Ambroxol, a metabolite of bromhexine, promotes breakdown of mucoproteins and mucopolysaccharide fibers, reducing mucus viscosity and aiding expectoration.

  • It stimulates surfactant (phospholipid) production by alveolar cells to lower surface tension and enhance airway clearance.

  • It also exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and bronchial hyperactivity–reducing effects, improving airway patency in conditions like COPD

Dosage & Administration

Preferably taken after meals.

  • Children (Syrup formulation):

    • 2–5 years: 2.5 ml (½ tsp), 2–3 times/day

    • 5–10 years: 5 ml (1 tsp), 2–3 times/day

    • 10 years and adults: 10 ml (2 tsp), 3 times/day

  • Pediatric Drops Alternative:

    • 0–6 months: 0.5 ml twice daily

    • 6–12 months: 1 ml twice daily

    • 1–2 years: 1.25 ml twice daily.

Contraindications & Interactions

  • Should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to ambroxol or bromhexine

  • Avoid concomitant use with antitussive agents like codeine, which may inhibit expectoration of liquefied mucus

Side Effects

  • Common: mild gastrointestinal discomfort, epigastric pain, feeling of gastric fullness

  • Rare: allergic reactions including skin rash, urticaria (hives), and angioneurotic edema

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Animal studies show no teratogenic effects, but use during the first trimester is discouraged, and safety during lactation is not established

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with:

    • Gastric or duodenal ulcers

    • Convulsive disorders

    • Hepatic or renal insufficiency

Storage

  • Store in a dry place, away from direct light, at temperatures not exceeding 30 °C. Keep out of reach of children
