Description
Active Ingredient & Classification
Oralon contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.2%, a potent antimicrobial agent that serves as an antiseptic mouthwash. It is classified under “other antibacterial preparations” and produced by ACI Limited.
Indications & Uses
-
Helps inhibit dental plaque formation and treat or prevent gingivitis, particularly when brushing isn’t feasible (e.g., post-surgery or in individuals with limited dexterity)
-
Also used to assist with gum healing after periodontal surgery or for post-operative oral care, and to support gingival healing
Pharmacology
Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. At low concentrations, it acts bacteriostatically by disrupting bacterial osmotic balance; at high concentrations, it becomes bactericidal, damaging cell walls.
Dosage & Administration
-
Adults: Use 10 ml, rinse for about 1 minute, twice daily.
-
For gingivitis: a 1-month course is often recommended.
-
For mouth ulcers or fungal infections: continue use 48 hours after symptoms resolve. Dentures can also be soaked for 15 minutes twice daily.
-
For children aged 12 and up and the elderly, the adult dose is typically appropriate. Children under 12 should only use it on professional advice.
Contraindications & Interactions
-
Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine or any excipients (though rare).
-
Incompatible with anionic agents such as those in regular toothpaste. Use toothpaste before rinsing—or wait between applications.
Side Effects
-
Superficial staining of tongue, teeth, or restorations (e.g., dentures); often avoidable by brushing and reducing tea, coffee, red wine intake
-
Taste disturbances and mild tongue burning initially; these usually fade with continued use
-
Rare: oral mucosal peeling (desquamation)—dilution with water may help; parotid gland swelling may occur, resolving after discontinuation
-
Allergic reactions or anaphylaxis are very rare
Precautions & Warnings
-
For oral external use only; do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes or ears; rinse thoroughly if contact occurs
-
Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing teeth immediately after use to preserve effectiveness
-
Pregnancy & lactation: No clear evidence of risk has been found, so no specific precautions are necessary
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
