Description

What is Mucosolvan?

Mucosolvan contains Ambroxol hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent designed to thin and loosen mucus in the respiratory tract, making it easier to cough up and clear congestion

Mechanism & Benefits

  • Thins mucus by breaking down mucopolysaccharide fibers.

  • Enhances mucociliary clearance, i.e., improves the movement of cilia in the airways.

  • Supports surfactant production, aiding lung function and mucus expulsion.

  • Starts acting within approximately 30 minutes of oral administration

Uses

Indicated for both acute and chronic bronchial or pulmonary conditions accompanied by thick, sticky mucus–including bronchitis, chesty coughs, or flu-related congestion

Dosage Guide (Syrup 30 mg/5 ml)

  • Adults & children over 12 years: 10 ml, 2–3 times daily; often 3Ă—10 ml for initial 2-3 days, then reduced to 2Ă— thereafter

  • Children 6–12 years: 5 ml, 2–3 times daily

  • Children 2–5 years: 2.5 ml, 2–3 times daily; under 2 years: only under medical advice

  • Syrup 15 mg/5 ml: Similar dosing pattern but lower concentration; up to 3Ă— daily for adults

Note: Treatment duration usually ranges from 7 to 14 days, depending on symptom severity

Precautions & Warnings

  • Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to ambroxol or any component; certain hereditary sugar intolerances (e.g., fructose intolerance), especially because syrup contains sorbitol

  • Serious but rare reactions: Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis—discontinue use immediately if skin or mucosal lesions develop

  • Use with caution in cases of severe kidney or liver impairment, pregnancy (especially first trimester), and breastfeeding

  • Avoid concomitant use with cough suppressants (antitussives), as this hinders mucus expectoration

Common Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain

  • Sensory effects: Altered taste, reduced sensitivity in mouth or throat, dry mouth

  • Allergic reactions (rare): Rash, hives, swelling, anaphylactic reactions

Storage & Additional Info

  • Storage: Below 30 °C; keep out of reach of children; discard 6 months after opening
